School Experience Programme

Applicants can apply via DfE APPLY for places on our Primary Initial Teacher Training Programmes. The School Experience Programme provides opportunities for potential trainees to experience a few days in a school in order to help decide whether teaching is the right career choice for them.

School experience is recommended for anyone hoping to enter Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Candidates for ITT will be requested to demonstrate that they have a good understanding of the role of a teacher, show creative and innovative teaching styles during a short lesson observation and discuss how they may manage behaviour in the classroom. A high-quality school experience prior to application can help to inform and evidence this.

The School Experience Programme (SEP) offers a short classroom-based experience to people who are considering applying to train to teach on the West Essex SCITT Initial Teacher Training Programme for Primary Education. The School Experience Programme will include observations of lessons, opportunities to talk to teachers about the profession, as well as a chance to discuss the structure of the course.

Participants will need to meet the programme requirements in order to apply for the SEP.

These are broadly the same as the requirements for the course and are:

  • an intention to apply for the West Essex SCITT Teacher Training Programme for Primary Education in the next application window;
  • have Maths and English at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent);
  • have, or are expected to have, a minimum of a 2:2 in a relevant degree subject;
  • have had less than 10 days experience in an English state school in the last 12 months.

St John’s CE Primary School (IG9 5RX) we may be able to offer experience in EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The duration of each placement will vary from one day up to three days. After the initial one day placement, we may agree further placement days of varying number. We do not charge for the School Experience Programme, but you may be asked to pay for a DBS check if required.
