Get School Experience - GOV.UK

Applicants can apply via DfE APPLY for places on our Primary Initial Teacher Training Programmes. Please take a look at the Get School Experience GOV.UK website   You can use this service if you want to request school experience in a primary or secondary school in England. This service can help provide opportunities for potential trainees to experience a few days in a school in order to help decide whether teaching is the right career choice for them.

School experience is recommended for anyone hoping to enter Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Candidates for ITT will be requested to demonstrate that they have a good understanding of the role of a teacher, show creative and innovative teaching styles during a short lesson observation and discuss how they may manage behaviour in the classroom. A high-quality school experience prior to application can help to inform and evidence this. 

Getting School Experience allows you to find out more about teaching by visiting schools. To be eligible for this service, you'll need:

1) the right to work in the UK

2) a degree (or to be studying for one)

3) to be aged 18 or over

School experience can offer a short classroom-based experience to people who are considering applying to train to teach. School Experience can include observations of lessons, opportunities to talk to teachers about the profession, as well as a chance to discuss the structure of the course.

Participants will need to be in the process of applying for a place on one of our courses, meet the programme requirements and hold a clear DBS check in order to apply.

St John’s CE Primary School (IG9 5RX) may be able to offer experience in EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The duration of each placement will vary from one day up to three days. After the initial one day placement, we may agree further placement days of varying number. We do not charge for School Experience but you will be asked to pay for a DBS check if required.
