Talk for Writing Training Day
The West Essex SCITT in association with the West Essex Teaching School Alliance, Epping Forest Area Schools Group and The Lime Trust held a CPD event on 4th October led by Maria Richards who is part of the Talk 4 Writing team and has worked extensively alongside Pie Corbett for many years. We welcomed School Direct Trainee teachers, NQTs and new members of staff who were not familiar with the Talk for writing (T4W) approach to Literacy, or for those wishing to refresh their knowledge and understanding of the approach.
Pie Corbett, educationalist and author, is renowned for his books on teaching creative writing, as well as many other educational books, schemes and anthologies. Pie writes widely in the educational press, provides training nationally and works as a poet and storyteller in schools.
Maria Richards first became involved in Talk for Writing in 2007. Since then she has worked closely with schools to implement the techniques and strategies in order to raise standards in writing. She has delivered training for many different settings to embed Talk for Writing into everyday practice. Through this work she has gained a wealth of experience in setting up the successful implementation of Talk for Writing across a school. Maria has also continued to work alongside Pie on a number of projects and conferences, including the very successful ‘Somerset Transforming Writing’ project
The impact of Talk for Writing has been outstanding. Typically, schools have found that children initially double their rate of progress and, where the approach has been applied systematically across a school, many schools have moved from only a third of Year 6 achieving level 4 to over 90%.
